Courtney Dauwalter named #2 2024 Worldwide UltraRunner of the Year

Courtney Dauwalter is second for the women in the World UltraRunner of the Year voting. Dauwalter won five ultras in five different countries on three continents, setting course records at both Hardrock 100 and Mt. Fuji 100. In any other year, this would likely have been more than good enough to earn top honors, but 2024 was an unusual year. There was very little head-to-head competition—of the 11 women who received votes for World UROY, seven of them were undefeated in 2024. Dauwalter lives in Leadville, Colorado, with her husband, Kevin Schmidt.

Jasmin Paris named #3 2024 Worldwide UltraRunner of the Year

Jasmin Paris was voted third in the 2024 World UltraRunner of the Year balloting. Paris ran only one race during the year, but it was a doozy. She was the first woman (and only the 20th runner in the event’s 38-year history) to complete all five laps of the Barkley Marathons and finish under the 60-hour cutoff. She finished in a dead sprint with only 99 seconds to spare. Paris is a veterinarian and is a senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. She lives in Gorebridge, Midlothian, Scotland, with her husband, Konrad Rawlik, and their two children.

Vincent Bouillard named #3 2024 Worldwide UltraRunner of the Year

Vincent Bouillard is third in the 2024 World UltraRunner of the Year voting for the men. Bouillard won UTMB in a major upset, breaking 20 hours in his first UTMB attempt and only his second 100-miler (he won Kodiak by UTMB in Southern California in 2023). He was also the first unsponsored runner to win UTMB in 20 years. In his only other 2024 race, Bouillard placed fifth at the 94k La Maxi Race. He works full time as a senior manager in product engineering for HOKA and won UTMB wearing a pair of shoes that he helped develop. He lives in Annecy, France, with his wife, Kamilah

Hayden Hawks named 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Hayden Hawks is the 2024 UltraRunner of the Year for the men. Hawks won the prestigious Courmayeur-Champex-Chamonix (CCC) 101k race on Mont Blanc and also won and set a course record at the highly competitive Black Canyon 100k. Hawks lives in the southern Utah town of Cedar City, with his wife, Ashley, and their two children.

Katie Schide named 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Katie Schide is the 2024 UltraRunner of the Year for the women. Schide won both of the world’s most competitive trail races – UTMB and Western States – and set a course record in her win at UTMB. Her winning time at Western States was the second-fastest in race history. She also won a highly competitive Canyons by UTMB 100k. A native of Maine, Schide lives in Isola, Alps-Maritimes, France, with her partner, French ultrarunner Germain Grangier.

David Roche named #2 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

David Roche is second among the men in the 2024 UROY voting. Roche broke Matt Carpenter’s long-standing course record at the Leadville Trail 100 and also won the Javelina Jundred 100-miler as well as the Silver Rush 50. A former environmental attorney, he is now a full-time coach and author. Roche lives in Boulder, Colorado, with his wife, Megan, and their two children.

Courtney Dauwalter named #2 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Courtney Dauwalter is second in this year’s UROY voting. A five-time winner of the award, she won all five races she entered in 2024, including setting course records at both Mt. Fuji 100 and Hardrock 100. She has been undefeated in ultras since 2019. The Hopkins, Minnesota, native lives in Leadville, Colorado, with her husband, Kevin Schmidt.

David Sinclair named #3 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

David Sinclair placed 3rd in the 2024 UROY voting. Widely considered a mountain runner, Sinclair posted a spectacular course record at the flat and fast JFK 50. He burnished his mountain credentials by winning both the Broken Arrow Skyrace and the Speedgoat 50k, where he also set a course record. A native of Vermont and a 2:16 marathoner, Sinclair is a ski coach in the Lake Tahoe area.

Rachel Drake named #3 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Rachel Drake is the 3rd-ranked woman for 2024. Her running year was highlighted by a course-record win at the JFK 50, becoming the first woman to break 6 hours in the 62-year history of the race. She also won the Black Canyon 100k and placed 8th at Western States. A native of Minnesota, Drake also finished her medical degree during the year. She and her husband, Tyler Green, and their two-year-old son, Lewis, moved from Portland, Oregon, to Salt Lake City this year, where she is now a medical resident.

Rod Farvard named #4 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Rod Farvard is the 4th-ranked man for 2024. He placed second at Western States, posting the third-best time ever. He also set a course record in winning the Canyons by UTMB 100k. Originally from the San Francisco suburb of Moraga, Farvard now lives in Mammoth Lakes, California.

Emily Hawgood named #4 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Emily Hawgood and Megan Eckert tied for 4th place in the women’s voting for 2024, each receiving 195 votes. Hawgood finished fourth at Western States – posting a 38-minute PR in her fourth consecutive top 10 finish. She was also sixth at UTMB. A native of Zimbabwe, Hawgood now lives in Roseville, California.

Megan Eckert named #4 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Megan Eckert and Emily Hawgood tied for 4th place in the women’s voting for 2024, each receiving 195 votes. Eckert had an incredible 10 ultra finishes in 2024, highlighted by the assist at Big’s Backyard, where she posted a women’s world best of 362.5 miles. Showing great versatility, she also won the Angeles Crest 100 and posted 153 miles in 24 hours at Desert Solstice in December. A middle school teacher and cross-country coach, Eckert lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with her husband, Joe.

Eli Hemming named #5 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Eli Hemming is the 5th-ranked man in the 2024 UROY balloting. Hemming won four large ultras during the year, including the Orsières-Champex-Chamonix (OCC) 57km race that is part of the UTMB series and had a whopping 1,534 finishers. Hemming’s win at the Black Canyon 60k was a course record. A former professional triathlete, Hemming lives in Kremmling, Colorado, with his wife, Tabor.

Courtney Olsen named #6 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Courtney Olsen is the 6th-ranked woman in the 2024 UROY voting. Olsen’s superlative year included a new world best for 50 miles, with a 5:31:56 clocking at Tunnel Hill and a third-place finish at the highly competitive Comrades Marathon (54 miles) in South Africa. She also placed 10th at the IAU World 100k Championships in India. Olsen lives in Bellingham, Washington, with her husband, Matthew.

Caleb Olson named #6 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Caleb Olson placed 6th among the men in the 2024 UROY voting. His busy year included eight ultra finishes, including a 14:40:12 fifth-place finish at Western States—the fastest ever debut time at the venerable event. Olson grew up in the Seattle area and now lives in Draper, Utah.

Jim Walmsley named #7 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Jim Walmsley is ranked 7th in the 2024 UROY voting. His only ultra finish this year was at Western States, where he won while posting the second-fastest time in the 51-year history of the race, behind only his own course record. He was leading at UTMB when he aggravated a knee injury and was forced to drop. Walmsley has won UROY six times, more than any other man. He lives in Flagstaff, Arizona, with his wife, Jessica Brazeau.

Mary Denholm named #7 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Mary Denholm comes in 7th among the women for 2024. She won the Leadville Trail 100, posting the second-fastest time in race history, behind only Ann Trason’s 1994 course record. She also won the Leadville Silver Rush 50 and placed second at the JFK 50. An attorney by training, she is now a full-time run coach at Lift Run Perform. She is originally from Maryland and now lives in Erie, Colorado.

Harry Subertas named #8 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Harry Subertas was ranked 8th among the men for 2024. Subertas ran four 200+ mile races in 2024, winning both the Tahoe 200 and the Cocodona 250. Originally from Lithuania, he moved to the US at age 18 to attend college. In addition to ultras, Subertas is a mountaineer and environmental scientist. He lives in Haines, Alaska.

Leah Yingling named #8 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Leah Yingling is the 8th-ranked woman for 2024. Her year included wins at the Quad Rock 50-mile and the Swiss Alps 50k. She also posted 400 miles in her first 6-day run and had strong 100-mile runs at both Run Rabbit Run and Western States. Yingling works as a biomedical engineer for a medical device company. Originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, she now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her husband, Mike McMonagle.

Hannah Allgood named #9 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Hannah Allgood is the 9th ranked woman for 2024. She excelled on a wide variety of terrain, winning the rugged Eiger 101k in Switzerland, and placing a strong second at the flat, fast Javelina Jundred 100-miler in Arizona. A physical therapist, she lives in Colorado Springs with her husband, Gil.

Ben Dhiman named #9 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Ben Dhiman checks in at #9 for the men in the 2024 UROY voting. Dhiman won the Madeira Island Ultra Trail 125k in Portugal, placed second at the Trail Andorra 100k and third at the famed Diagonale des Fous 176k on Réunion Island. Originally from Ohio, he currently lives in Soues in the French Pyrenees with his family.

Marianne Hogan named #10 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Marianne Hogan is the 10th ranked woman in the UROY voting for 2024. After an injury plagued her in 2023, Hogan returned to racing with a 6th-place showing at the Transvulcania 125k in the Canary Islands and then won the Swiss Canyon Trail 111k. She finished a strong third at UTMB to wrap her competitive season. A former triathlete, Hogan was born, raised and still lives in Montréal, Québec.

Ihor Verys named #10 2024 UltraRunner of the Year

Ihor Verys checks in at 10th in the men’s UROY voting. He ran his first ultra in 2021 yet won the Barkley Marathons less than three years later—on his first attempt. He also won the HURT 100 in Hawaii at the beginning of 2024. Born and raised in Chornomorsk, Ukraine, Verys moved to Canada at 21 to attend graduate school. He currently lives in Chilliwack, British Columbia.
